Three practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 500, or 1000 ppm genistein. The three diets were distributed for 1 year to groups of rainbow trout undergoing their first gametogenesis and until spawning. Growth performance of rainbow trout was not affected by dietary treatments. Plasma cholesterol levels were equivalent between groups. In males, a slight but constant induction of vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis and a decrease in testosterone levels were observed. A slight decrease in plasma levels of beta FSH and beta LH was noticed at the end of spermatogenesis in the male fish fed a diet with 500 ppm (genistein) (from 2.16 +/- 0.39 to 1.47 +/- 0.23 for beta FSH and from 0.44 +/- 0.09 to 0.31 +/- 0.09 for beta LH). This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. Ionic (Na+, K+, Cl-, PO43-, pH), total CO2, total calcium and protein concentrations in the plasma and endolymph of the inner ear were compared in trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and turbot Scophthalmus maximus. We exploited the inherent individual diversity in swimming performance of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss to investigate the hypothesis that maximum cardiac performance is linked to active metabolic rate (AMR) and critical swimming speed (U-crit). Six hundred juveniles (body mass similar to 150 g) were screened using a swimming challenge of 1.2 m s(-1) to identify 'poor swimmers' and 'good swimmers', i.e. the first and last 60 fish to fatigue, respectively. Kinetic and pharmacological characteristics of Ca2+ fluxes across the saccular epithelium of trout were studied using a perfused isolated inner ear. Ca-45(2+) influx from the Ringer solution to the endolymph was 3-4 nmoles h(-1) mu(-1) endolymph, which corresponds to a global turnover rate of the endolymph calcium of 200% h(-1). Ca2+ entry into the proximal endolymph was faster than into the distal fluid. Regulations governing the management of streamside vegetation (riparian buffers) lie at a nexus between environmental, social, and land development interests, and can yield especially contentious debates among stakeholders. In 2001, the State Legislature of Georgia, USA, took up this debate; the Legislature reduced the minimum width of mandatory-forested riparian buffers along designated trout streams from ∼30 m (100 ft) to ∼15 m (50 ft), and commissioned this study to assess the expected response of existing trout populations. Intensive aquaculture, especially the production of carnivorous species, requires artificial feeding. Fishmeal and oil are preferred to vegetable proteins, since marine proteins provide the essential nutrients required by farmed fish. Therefore, given the stagnant production of reduction species and the rapid increase in aquaculture production, fishmeal availability would pose a biological constraint on aquaculture contribution to world fish supplies in the future, unless alternative feed sources can be incorporated in diets. In this paper, the technical substitutability between fish and vegetable based feeds are assessed through the estimation of Morishima elasticities of substitution. These are derived from a meta-analysis production function. |

Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) was applied to evaluate the global environmental impact of two scenarios of trout production systems based on the operational information from an operational farm using a flow through system (FFF) and an experimental pilot low head recirculating system (RSF) located on the same site.
